DARK PERSONALITY
TRAITS

Dark personality traits refer to three overlapping but distinct psychological patterns - Narcissism, Machiavellianism, and Psychopathy, often referred to as the “Dark Triad.”

People high in these traits show self-centeredness, emotional manipulation, and a lack of empathy, often hide behind charm or confidence.

Understanding these traits helps explain toxic relationships, power dynamics, and emotional abuse, especially in contexts like marriage or divorce.

Understanding the Dark Triad

Each part of the Dark Triad - Narcissism, Psychopathy, and Machiavellianism, can pose complex challenges to the people who encounter it.

Narcissism mostly involves feeling deserving of praise and special treatment that others don’t receive.

Psychopathy mostly involves being cold, unempathic, and insensitive to the needs of others.

Machiavellianism mostly involves manipulating people for personal gain.

Somebody who exhibits all three of these traits can pose a genuine danger to the mental and emotional well-being of others. Now imagine such a person also lacking any inhibition toward violence, could that be the very definition of pure evil?

Despite the seemingly obvious connections among the three traits, researchers have yet to find definitive evidence of a true correlation.
